Tool 09 / Market Timing

Buy in the quiet months. Sell when buyers come back.

General seasonal patterns for six vehicle types, and the yearly events that push used prices up or down. A starting point for timing, not a price quote.

Not live data

There is no free, reliable source of live used-car prices to plug in here, so this page covers general seasonal tendencies by category. Check real comps in the Comp Tracker before you decide. Local conditions can override the seasonal norm.

BuyBest time to buy

SellBest time to sell

Why
Snow-belt buyers start shopping seriously when the forecast turns, and demand for capability stays up through winter. Prices tend to soften once winter passes and most people who needed a 4WD have bought one.

Patterns that move the whole market

  1. 01

    Tax refund season

    Feb–Apr

More cash buyers enter the market, especially at lower price points. Prices tend to firm up in most categories.

  2. 02

    End of model year

    Sep–Dec

New-car dealers push year-end numbers, which adds trade-in supply and can soften used prices, especially on mainstream sedans and SUVs.

  3. 03

    Back to school

    Jul–Sep

Demand rises for cheap, reliable first cars as students head to campus or a first job.

  4. 04

    Weather-driven categories

    Year-round

Convertibles and 4WD vehicles tend to swing the most with the seasons. Commuter cars swing much less.

Seasonal patterns are general historical tendencies, not guarantees. Local market conditions, model-specific demand, and the wider economy can all override the seasonal norm.
